Testing Requirements

As of November 8th, 2024, Symbioun Veterinary Clinic will be requiring brucellosis testing every 6 months and heartworm testing when beginning timing a female’s cycle or minimum of every 6 months. For stud dogs boarding we will require a negative heartworm every 6 months. If owners are able to provide proof of a negative heartworm test within 6 months and proof of purchase or administration of appropriate prevention for that duration of time, this will be honored.

Following a positive heartworm antigen test (4dx), we will run a second 4dx test, a Witness Heartworm antigen test and perform a microfilaria test. Any positive female will not be bred in our facility and timing for the current cycle will cease. A positive female will not be allowed to stay at the clinic. Proof of treatment and negative Heartworm test will have to be presented for a previously positive female to be bred in subsequent cycles.

If a Male is positive for heartworms we will still pursue semen evaluation/freezing, however, the dog will not be allowed to board until proof of treatment and a negative heartworm test are obtained.

In the case of a Brucellosis positive we will pull a new blood sample and we will choose another lot of Brucellosis tests. If still positive, we will not breed or keep the semen. The State Veterinarian for our Region (Nelson) will be contacted with a positive result and the sample will be sent to the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Further instruction for handling the positive patient will be directed by the State Veterinarian.
